What Can Implant Overdenture Treat
What Are Implant Overdentures?
Implant-supported overdentures are a type of removable denture that is securely anchored to dental implants placed in the jawbone.
Titanium implants are surgically embedded into the bone, and the denture is fitted with special clips or attachments that firmly snap onto the implants, holding the denture securely in place. Unlike traditional dentures, which can move or slip, implant supported overdentures may provide improved stability, comfort, and a functional solution.
Although still removable, the denture clips onto the implants to hold it firmly in place, providing improved stability and retention. Implant-supported overdentures are typically used for the lower jaw, as long-term success in the upper jaw can be much less predictable due to bone density differences between the upper and lower jaw.

How Overdentures Differ From Standard Dentures
Also known as ‘snap-on-dentures’ , this tooth replacement solution uses a special attachment to smoothly snap dentures in place. There are two types of dental implant overdentures: implant-supported overdentures and implant-retained overdentures. Both options can replace decaying or missing teeth and improve bite function and stability. Overdentures will also help restore speech and mouth functionality, which may have been affected due to missing or damaged teeth.
| Overdentures | Standard Dentures | |
|---|---|---|
| Stability & Retention | Overdentures clip into place in the lower jaw this helps to keep the denture in firmly and stable | Standard dentures rely solely on the gums/suction and adhesive glues to keep in position, therefore may be unstable leading to movement. |
| Chewing Strength | Overdentures allow for stronger bite force and chewing | Standard dentures may offer limited biteforce |
| Bone Preservation | Overdentures can help to preserve the jawbone due to implant support. | Traditional dentures may lead to bone shrinking and absorption over time. |
| Removal & Maintenance | Removable for cleaning | Removable for cleaning |

How Long Do Overdentures Last?
Overdentures are made from similar acrylic materials as traditional dentures and are designed to be durable. On average, they may last between 5–15 years, depending on individual use and maintenance. The main difference is the addition of attachment clips that allow the denture to connect to implants, while regular wear and tear is similar to that of conventional dentures.
As the clips are constantly used with taking the dentures on and off daily, they will eventually wear. Replacing the inserts in these clips is a simple process that can be done on the spot in just a few minutes and incurs minimal cost.
How Do I Clean My Overdenture?
Overdentures should be removed nightly for cleaning with a toothbrush and water. They should be left out of the mouth overnight, soaking in water or denture cleaning products.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Overdentures?
Patients who have failing lower teeth that need clearance can usually have the bad teeth removed and implants placed at the same time. A temporary denture can be made to provide teeth immediately at the same visit. The implants need to integrate and heal for about 3-4 months before clips can be used on them.
Those who currently wear lower full dentures can also have this procedure done with implants placed and allowed to heal for 3-4 months before installing clips in the existing denture, or making a new one. The original denture can always be worn over the implants during the healing period.
