What are Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns and bridges may be recommended as part of your treatment plan depending on your individual dental needs, oral health, and long-term goals. Our team will assess your situation and discuss suitable options tailored to your circumstances. Here's a breakdown of them:

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped covering designed to restore a tooth that is damaged, weakened, or affected by decay. It is placed over the existing tooth structure to help protect it and restore its function and appearance.

Crowns are generally made in ceramic, they are tooth coloured and natural in appearance. They are customised for the individual to provide superior strength and aesthetics to the tooth being restored. In some instances, crowns can also be made in metal or gold.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a custom-made appliance designed to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth with the use of crowns. It can help minimise the risk of other dental issues such as shifting teeth, bite problems, and further tooth loss by filling the gaps left by missing teeth.

The teeth adjacent to the gap are prepared and contoured to receive crowns, the replacement tooth is then custom made and attached to the crowns on the adjacent teeth. The entire bridge is fabricated as a single unit, cemented onto the supporting teeth permanently.

When Are Dental Crowns Needed?

Crowns are recommended for teeth that are weak, broken down or have had extensive fillings in them. These teeth are prone to severe cracking and fracturing with the stress of daily chewing. When a crown is placed, it completely covers the tooth, it acts like a protective cap, greatly reducing the risk of tooth fracture in the future. Crowns also have an added benefit of cosmetic enhancement, allowing the shape, form and colour of the tooth to be customised and altered for best cosmetic effect.

For teeth that are not compromised or weakened, but cosmetic enhancements are desired, Veneers are the ideal treatment choice instead. To learn more about Veneers, visit our cosmetic page by clicking *here.*

When Are Dental Bridges Needed?

Bridges are used there is gap due to a missing tooth/teeth, and the teeth next to the gap are suitable for crowns. The support teeth are crowned with the replacement tooth fabricated attached to the crowns as a single unit.

Bridges are a permanent, fixed way to replace a missing tooth / teeth in a very natural manner. It does not require surgery into the gum or jaw bone (compared to implants), and the steps involved with this treatment option are minimal, with short treatment time. One does need to consider that by joining the support teeth together, it does have implications for the bridge if sometime in the future there was an issue with one of the support teeth. Treatment of this issue can be made more complex as it would involve the entire bridge.

Custom Tooth Preparation

To ensure a secure fit, the tooth is carefully reshaped before the crown is placed. The amount of preparation required depends on your individual tooth and treatment plan.

Supports Long Term Oral Health

A crown strengthens and protects the visible part of a tooth, but it cannot prevent future issues affecting the nerve inside the tooth. If required, root canal treatment can often still be performed through the crown.

Our Process For Dental Crowns & Dental Bridge

Crowns and bridges are tailored dental treatments designed to restore the appearance and function of your smile. Your dentist will guide you through each step of the process and discuss the most suitable treatment options based on your individual needs and oral health.

Step 1: Consultation & Assessment

Consult and assessment with X-rays as needed

Step 2: Tooth Preparation & Digital Scan

Preparation of the tooth/teeth - any decay is removed, cracks are stabilised, a solid strong core of tooth is created. The tooth is gently contoured to receive a crown, then a digital scan is taken of the jaws. A temporary crown is made on the spot and temporarily protects the tooth while the permanent crown is being custom made.

Step 3: Custom Crown Fabrication

It takes between 1-3 weeks for the crown to be custom fabricated in specialised high tech laboratories.

Step 4: Crown Placement & Final Fit

When the crown / bridge is ready, the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown/bridge is cemented on.

Step 5: Review & Ongoing Care
